Job Description Fort Valley State University, the only 1890 land-grant university in Georgia, is a comprehensive institution that provides an education to over 2,800 students including graduate students. The university is located in the town of Fort Valley in Peach County, the original site of the state's peach industry. Its 1,365-acre (5.52 km2) campus is Georgia's second-largest public university in area. JOB SUMMARY: The successful candidate will be responsible for the research activities and day-to-day management of the livestock pastures and hay fields for the College of Agriculture Family Sciences and Technology (CAFST). He/she will apply a wide range of concepts, practices, and procedures from two or more specialized fields of science, such as agronomy, soil science, forestry, agricultural economics or agriculture to accomplish the duties. This position is ideal for someone who is motivated, able to prioritize work assignments as they come in, and capable of working without close supervision. DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: --- Conduct soil testing, soil amendment, pasture and hay field fertilization as needed --- Seed pastures, cut hay ( including hay baling) --- Maintain and upkeep fences which includes fence lines and alley ways (weed control on fences) --- Manage the overall daily operations haying for a farm --- Recommend the purchasing of tools, equipment and materials for pasture and hay field management. --- Demonstrate clear integrity and a sense of ethics and responsibility to the farm and its employees on a daily basis, serving as a model for others. --- Manage water lines for all animals --- Plan for pasture rotation, determining which specific animal groups will be placed in particular paddocks, pens, and when and how to time graze in collaboration with other staff, extension agents and researchers to ensure timely movements of animals. --- Use farm machinery including weighing chute, tractors, trucks, utility vehicles, and tractor-drawn or mounted implements (loader, manure spreader, rotary mower, mower conditioner, hay baler, ensilage cutter, feed grinder, post driver, post hole digger), pickup truck and livestock trailer combination, skid steer loader, and portable welder. QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in agriculture, animal science, agricultural economics, and soil science or other related field is required. Experienced overseeing hay farm operations, skills in operating medium and heavy-duty tractor and a variety of agricultural implements, snow blower, power tools and shop equipment. Able to work independently Friendly and professional demeanor Exceptional written and verbal communication skills PREFERRED: --- Operational and management experience in the farming industry preferred --- Familiar with how farm equipment functions --- Planning, scheduling and project management experience preferred --- Hay Storage Management experience preferred --- Computer experience required - full Microsoft Office Suite, Internet experience required at a minimum WORKING CONDITIONS: Overnight travel for training may be required Working outdoors to assisting scientist with animals and or collecting samples Work hours can be uneven and seasonally long during research experiments; work can be hazardous due to the operation of farm equipment and chemical handling; individual should be able to work in a variety of weather conditions.
