Job Title: Certified Surgical Technologist Profession: Surgical Tech Specialty: Surgical Techs Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Day Hours per Shift: 10 hours Experience: Two years of CST experience required License: - Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) - Basic Life Support (BLS) Certifications: National certification required Must-Have: - High school diploma or GED - Graduate of an accredited program in surgical technology - Ability to read, write, and speak the English language - Strong customer service and interpersonal skills - Ability to collaborate with other healthcare providers in patient care - Ability to delegate to team members as required - Ability to multi-task and function in stressful situations - Strong detail orientation - Basic computer skills Description: The Certified Surgical Technologist functions under the direction of the registered professional nurse. The role assists the healthcare team in providing safe, age-appropriate, and culturally aware patient care. The technologist has knowledge, skill, and ability to perform duties within the context of moderate to high acuity surgical cases. He/she anticipates the needs of the surgeon and other members of the healthcare team. Demonstrates an acquisition of additional surgical skills for progressively more difficult cases. Exhibits an efficient, organized surgical plan for assigned cases. Takes initiative to discuss surgical plans with other team members. Able to troubleshoot instruments and equipment. Anticipates additional supplies or equipment required for procedures. Participates in performance improvement initiatives. Duties include preparation of the operative suite and surgical field to ensure a safe patient care environment. Maintains vigilance for the maintenance of the sterile field and addresses patient safety concerns. Gather required instruments, supplies, and serve as needed surgical assistant. Assist with inventory, ordering, and stocking operating rooms and additional perioperative areas as assigned. Maintains compliance with Joint Commission standards at all times. Call or late coverage may be required as needed. Assists the healthcare team in providing safe, relationship-based patient-centered care. Practices using current clinical practice standards under the supervision of the registered nurse. Upholds healthcare policies and procedures, ensuring standards are met, including patient safety goals. Supports evidence-based practice and ethical accountability. Demonstrates teamwork and collaboration within the healthcare team. Serves as patient advocate including care and safety measures. Cleans and prepares the surgical area and assists in preparing rooms for the next patient. Participates in performance improvement initiatives. Observes patients’ conditions and immediately reports any changes to the physician and registered nurse. Actively participates in surgical counts with circulator. Prepares sterile dressings and cleans instruments for terminal sterilization. Plans for the next steps in the surgical progression and adjusts when emergencies arise. Maintains organization and cleanliness of the surgical area. Assumes responsibility for other duties as assigned, including maintaining stock and medical supplies. Completes all required competencies and educational requirements related to the field. Strives to implement new processes or equipment introduced by surgeons. Maintains continuing education hours relevant to the field. Always ensures exceptional care for patients and organizational standards.
