Job Title: Certified Surgical Technologist Profession: Surgical

Day Hours per Shift: 0645 - 1715, 4 days per week (Primarily
Mon-Fri, with potential weekend call shifts) Experience: Preferred
Main Operating Room/Trauma Center Experience License: Certified
Surgical Technologist Certifications: Basic Life Support or BLS -
Instructor Must-Have: Certified Surgical Technologist required to
have a certificate or associate's degree from a community college
or a technical school and have passed a competency examination
through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical
Assisting or the National Center for Competency Testing.
Description: The Surgical Technologist Certified functions under
the direction of the registered professional nurse. Assists the
health care team in providing safe, age-appropriate, and culturally
aware patient care. Has knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform
duties within the context of moderate to high acuity surgical
cases. Exhibits an acquisition of additional surgical skills for
progressively more difficult cases. Demonstrates an efficient,
organized surgical plan for assigned cases. Takes initiative to
discuss the surgical plan with other members of the healthcare
team. Able to troubleshoot instruments and equipment. Anticipates
any additional supplies or equipment required for procedures. Has
the ability to mentor, precept, or train in various modalities.
Participates in performance improvement initiatives. Duties
include, but are not limited to, preparation of the operative suite
and surgical field to ensure a safe patient care environment.
Maintains the sterile field and other patient safety concerns
throughout procedures. Gathers required instruments and supplies
and serves as a surgical assistant as needed. Other duties as
assigned may include assisting with inventory, ordering, and
stocking. Ensures compliance with all standards at all times. Call
or late coverage may be required related to the facility. Checks
supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures. Assists with
room set-up to include opening sterile supplies. Sets up a sterile
table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medication needed
for procedures accurately and timely. Performs appropriate surgical
counts with the circulator. Actively participates in the procedure
pause/time-out. Scrubs, gowns, and gloves; gowns and gloves the
surgeon and assistants. Assists in draping the sterile field.
Passes instruments to the surgeon during the procedure. Maintains
an organized back table and operative field. Anticipates and offers
surgeons suggestions throughout the procedure for facilitating
cases. Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during
procedures. Prepares sterile dressings. Actively participates in
post-procedure pause, ensuring proper handling of specimens. Cleans
and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization, notifying
related staff of critical needs. Applies principles of asepsis to
ensure the prevention of infection and safety. Prepares case carts
according to procedures and preference cards. Observes the
patient's condition and immediately reports any changes to the
physician and registered nurse. Proactively plans for the next
steps in the procedure as needed. Prepares OR rooms and other areas
for receiving patients, including stocking and cleaning equipment.
Maintains financial stewardship related to supplies and equipment.
Provides relationship-based patient-centered care consistent with
population-specific characteristics. Partners with the patient by
verifying procedures and conducting bedside shift reports.
Practices using current clinical standards under the supervision of
the registered nurse. Upholds all organizational policies,
procedures, and clinical competencies. Supports evidence-based
practice and ethical accountability. Demonstrates teamwork and
collaboration in providing patient care. Promotes team spirit and a
positive work environment. Serves as a patient advocate, ensuring
safety and comfort measures. Assists colleagues with cleaning and
preparing rooms for the next patient. Participates in performance
improvement initiatives and seeks opportunities to improve
processes. Maintains a positive attitude and flexibility in
assignments. Completes all required competencies and education
relevant to the position. Provides a positive learning environment
for students and new hires. Maintains knowledge of new technology
or procedures introduced. Ensures organization and cleanliness of
the surgical area. Completes all additional duties as assigned.
